It’s nearly Christmas? My, it doesn’t feel like it on the West Side of LA. No snow, no puffy coats, no garland. I’ve barely seen a single string of holiday lights. It’s as if I’m stuck in a bubble, like Narnia, a land with no Christmas. But rather than a White Witch and everlasting winter, my Narnia consists of 70 degree days, stand-still traffic, and block after block of vegan restaurants flanked by palm trees.
The only true Christmas spirit I’ve experienced is the lovely little tree that showed up in the office on Monday. My boss had bought it over the weekend, but forgot to get lights and didn’t realize it would need to be watered five to seven times a week.
Despite his rather plain disposition, I love our little tree. He’s become a dear friend to all of us in the office.
But as a joke I photoshopped him on fire and sent it in Slack while my bosses were out.
We have fun. Anyway, here are five (“You do the math!”) things worth sharing this week:
1. Sometimes I see a piece of art that feels like it was inexplicably made just for me. This week, seeing C’mon C’mon in the theater was one of those moments. It’s a beautiful movie.
2. I clipped out some lovely stop-motion animations from a new documentary on the creation of the smart phone.
3. I love this look at the daily routine of artist Lawrence Weiner.
4. Here are two tweets that stopped me in my scroll this week: A LEGO dinosaur and a photo of a mountain morning.
5. I love this video essay analyzing sweat in cinema (it’s not gross, I promise).
That’s it for this week.
